Who is the Avatar in this game? The Avatar is a female Earthbender (currently unnamed). She is an NPC and will be either a mod-played or mod-controlled character when the game plot evolves to the point of needing her. Can I play a character from the series? No, this game is set roughly 150 years after the series end. The original cast is long dead, this game will be entirely populated by original characters. How come only older characters can be strong benders? Toph was a Metalbender and she was only 12! Unlike Mike and Brian, we are dealing with a world where many different players control many different characters, we do not have the luxury of a small group of people controlling every character and event. For this reason, we are going to assume that the gAang were special cases, a small group of prodigies who excelled at far younger ages than the average bender would be able to, not the standard by which all other benders should be measured by. Also, let's not forget that the original crew were in a race to stop the end of the world, in this setting characters will have school, jobs and social lives to distract them from constantly training and improving their abilities. Can my character have a pet? Yes! There are many kinds of animals populating the Avatar world, your character is free to have any cross-breed pet you would like. As "pure" or single-species animals, like Bosco the bear, are rare in Avatar, please only use cross-breed pets. We do ask that there please be no talking animals. Dragons are making a comeback, but they cannot be pets. Also, there are no more Flying Bison. Can I play an animal or a dragon? No, human characters only, please. You are free to NPC your character's pet, however. Why can Air Nomads not be played in this game? Mike and Brian have commented that Aang was "truly" the last Airbender, and that attempting to repopulate his race would be impossible. We are going off the words of the creators, and in this game, Air Nomads died with Aang. To compensate for this, a new form of bending is arising, this new bending ability will be be a large focus of the game. Can my character be related to someone from the series? Yes, however there are caps on the direct descendants of the main cast to prevent a flood of related characters. Also keep in mind that if you chose to be related to a main character, your character will be directly related to anyone else with that common ancestor. This can be important if you want to pursue a romance line but want to avoid the cousin lovin'. Can I play the Fire Lord/Lady/Earth King/Etc? As of now we are not allowing kings/queens/rulers to be played, as the game deals with global politics and events, we need to be able to use these characters for game-wide plot. We have tried allowing players to control these characters, however it resulted in mod/player tensions, so we have decided to disallow it. Non-ruling royalty, including crown princes or princesses, are welcome. Why do we have to go by the canon pairings? I don't like one or more of them! Honestly, the mods don't like all of the canon pairings either, but going by what Mike and Brian wrote is the easiest and most fair approach to deciding the history of the game. You don't have to like them, we promise. Can my character be related to another character in the game? Yes, this will often happen with characters who are descended from the original crew. If you want to play a sibling, parent or child of another character in the game, please contact that player before applying to ensure that histories will match and no toes will be stepped on. So what are these Chibenders? As the Air Nomads are no more, a new bending style is emerging. Chibending deals with the manipulation of light and dark and will be represented by a yin-yang symbol. There will be two schools of Chibending at the beginning, a style which deals with manipulating shadows and a style which involves the manipulation of light. This bending style is very new, so there is not yet a set look for Chibenders, and Chibenders can originate from any nation. Further information on Chibenders can be found here. How can I fill out the application correctly when someone else could be playing a sibling/family member of my character? We are not asking you to write the history or even come up with a name for another character. A general statement such as "They have one living parent and two siblings" is more than sufficient for the application. The game is far enough removed from the original series that other descendants can be cousins or nieces/nephews rather than siblings. Can I play a Chibender? Yes, players are welcome to play Chibenders. Please be aware that this is a new bending style, so there is little known about it. Unlike the other bending styles, there is not a developed school or training methods to help young benders improve their powers. Due to this lack of knowledge about the style, Chibenders of both the light and the dark school will see their abilities grow more slowly than any other bending style. Can my character be a Chibender and another kind of bender? No, only the Avatar can control more than one element. If you want to play a Chibender, they will need to enter the game as a Chibender or as a non-bender. Chibenders can emerge from any nation, they simply cannot control the element of their mother nation. How come Chibenders bend light and shadow rather than actual chi? As of now, "chi" is simply the term used to describe their abilites, however Chibenders have yet to find their full potential. The kind of bending they will be capable after years of study has yet to be seen, and could very well eventually involve manipulating chi itself. What kind of fighting does the Sword and Fan teach? Sword and Fan teaches all manner of fighting styles, from the fighting styles used by benders from the three nations, minus the bending, of course, to weapons play, the style used by the Kyoshi Warriros, Ty Lee's style, and/or any other combination a player can dream up. Benders can learn other fighting styles at Sword and Fan, and can certainly teach other benders and non-benders. Just as Zuko learned to use double swords, just as Piandao, from the Fire Nation, taught Sokka, of the Water Tribe, just as Suki taught Sokka the fighting style of Kyoshi, students of the Sword and Fan believe that the fighting arts belong to all, not only to people of one nation, gender or ability. Does this game allow sex? Yes, we do allow for sex between characters, however in the spirit of Avatar we want to keep all community posts relatively clean. This means that all sex scenes in the IC community should be written to fade to black, regardless of the age of the characters involved. You are free to continue the scenes in AIM or in a PSL journal, but please keep the main community smut-free. So no sex, do you also ban swearing, violence and homosexuals? Swearing is allowed, as should be obvious by the mod journal icons, violence is also allowed. Excessive swearing, graphic violence and any other mature themes should be placed under a cut and with a warning. Homosexual, bisexual and even pansexual characters are welcome, however we ask all players to keep in mind that, regardless of their sexuality, sex should be a part of a character, not the focus of it. Why are characters below 16 banned? Characters below sixteen are not banned, they are severely restricted. This is not a high school game and we want to encourage quality writing. Too many younger characters can result in the cliques and petty drama that runs rampant in high school. Younger characters which are written well and will be useful for plot will be allowed. Younger siblings or younger children for current characters who will help further game and/or character plot will be allowed so long as maturity is maintained. Does my character have to be from Awatan Sathit (the Fire nation Capital City)? As this game takes place in Awatan Sathit all characters should currently be living there, however we welcome and encourage characters who were born or previously lived elsewhere. There are many reasons for characters to move to the city, including schooling opportunities at one of the bending academies, for jobs, to peruse a political career or for family reasons. What is there to do in Awatan Sathit? There are the three bending academies, the Sword and Fan weapons training school and a basic primary school for characters 18 and below. The city is very large and very diverse beyond that. There is a museum, a zoo, a Waterbender run aquarium, multiple shops and eateries, a theater and, of course, the Jasmine Dragon tea shop. There is a major festival each season as well as various theater and musical performances, both professional and amateur. There is a more detailed list of shops here and events listed here, but you are not limited to what is listed. If it fits into the Avatar world, feel free to say it exists and have your character hang out there. What is the !bulletinboard tag for? Awatan Sathit has a message board in the city center, near the fountain. This can be used for in-character requests. Need a tutor? Someone to pick up a shift? Lost your pet turtle-pup? Post up a wanted or missing ad here. This will be used to announce official events, such as festivals and plays, but characters/players are more than welcome to use it, as well. Do benders below the age of 17 go to the preparatory school only, to a bending school only, or do they go to both? All characters below the age of 17 will attend the preparatory school, all characters are welcome to attend study at the Sword and Fan, benders have the option of a bending school, however it is not required of them. As we have seen at many points in the series, benders have an urge or need to bend, so this desire should be kept in mind when playing any bender. Do all characters go to the same school? Do they live in dorms or at home? How does that work? In order to make interaction and the game overall easier, there is only one preparatory school in the city and all students will attend it. Those who have family in the city will live at home, there is a dormitory for students with family who live elsewhere. Awatan Sathit has what are considered the best schools in the world, so many more wealthy families will send their children to study at the Capital. Is the Order of the White Lotus still around? Yes, and we want old people to be members! The Order of the White Lotus will play a rather large role throughout the game. Characters who are in the Order will have access to special information before the rest of the population and will have an active hand in shaping the future of the game. The Order has solid rankings and even an organized list for potential members, but to get on it, a character must convince an Order member that they are worth the attention... Do characters have online journals or instant messengers? No, these things simply do not exist in the Avatar world. You are free to treat your characters journal as a personal, paper-and-ink diary, to use it as a "snail mail" or, more fitting of the Avatar world, hawk mail system of sending letters or notes back and forth to other characters, or to simply leave it with only the Character Information. No one should be IM'ing anyone else to chat "in character" as in this setting, instant messengers do not exist. You are, of course, free to scene over messengers. Are there any restrictions on PBs? All PBs must be age appropriate, no thirty year olds playing sixteen year olds unless you find and only use icons of the PB at that age. No two people can use the same PB, no, not even for twins. Additionally, we prefer PB's with dark hair, as we want to try and preserve the look of the Avatar world, and Avatar had very few light haired characters. We will allow light haired characters if they have parents from two different nations, or if they have a strong enough back story to explain it. Are there limitations on how many benders vs non-benders are allowed? Not as of yet, however we reserve the right to change this as the game expands. Earthbenders statistically have the lowest number of benders compared to the general population, so we would love to have several characters from the Earth Kingdom who are non-benders. What if I have a question that is not listed here? By all means, please ask! You are free to comment here with questions, or you can ask in the Drop Box where comments are screened. |
